Setting Comfort
The PassiveLogic Hive ecosystem automatically adjusts conditions in a building, based on a sophisticated model of human comfort. It models with 6 factors, 3 of which can be adjusted. The other 3 are automatically monitored by sensors in the space or inferred from measurements in other spaces.
In general, these three comfort settings should be set up by the building manager or other authorized user:
- Likes to Wear: The clothing that the occupants are likely to wear in this space.
- Activity Level: How active the occupants usually are in this space, such as sitting at a desk, standing, or walking.
- Adaptability: How flexible are the occupants in their ability to tolerate variation in comfort? For example, perhaps residents of a senior center would be less adaptable and need a narrower range, so the system will keep comfort within a more narrow range and start conditioning sooner when comfort drifts. Using a setting of greater adaptability helps the system save energy, as it allows equipment to not be used as often to make minor adjustments, so take that into consideration.
These settings can also be adjusted on the Hive touch screen. After that setup, the Hive platform can optimize the comfort of the environment, balancing comfort and efficiency.
Setting & Adjusting Comfort for Zone Groups
Default settings are provided for clothing, activity level, and adaptability. Most situations will be automatically kept within human comfort range.
If you want to change settings for specific spaces, change them using the Comfort Control panels.
For a building that is being controlled (not just monitored), comfort can be adjusted on the Hive screen. It can also be adjusted remotely in the Live software, if you have Editor or Owner permissions on the project.
To adjust in the cloud:
- Sign in to the PassiveLogic software suite (Chrome browser required). The Portfolio landing page opens.
- In Portfolio, select the deployed project and click the icons in the project card to open in Live.
A 3D image of the building is displayed. - Click the zone group or comfort bubble that you want to adjust. Click the settings icon
to open the advanced settings in a second panel.
Note: If a zone group is not selected, you will see a generalized view of comfort personas for multiple zones, and the slider to adjust will not be visible. - Adjust the sliders for Likes to Wear, Activity Level, and Adaptability based on what you expect for occupants of this space.
Keep in mind that setting Adaptability higher allows for a greater range of what is considered comfortable. This allows the system to optimize more for energy use, and avoid turning on equipment more than is necessary.
- In general, let the system adjust comfort automatically. If necessary you can force changes here. Move the clothing slider based on the discomfort you are feeling, toward "I'm Hot" or "I'm Cold."
Viewing Comfort Settings (Guest or Building Manager)
- On the Hive, simply tap the screen to see the 3D model of the building.
- In the cloud, select a deployed project in Portfolio and open it with Live.
- In the cloud, you can also ask Qortex questions about comfort in an individual building (feature in beta development).
In a building that is being controlled, the default sensor billboards displayed show the calculated comfort within a range. You can use the display picker to choose which value is displayed in the billboards. (In a building that is being monitored only, the comfort range billboards are not available, only measurements such as temperature.)
Adjusting Comfort (Guest or Building Manager)
The PassiveLogic Hive ecosystem automatically adjusts conditions in a building, based on our sophisticated model of human comfort. In general as noted above, three comfort settings should be created by the building manager or other authorized user: expected clothing, activity level, and adaptability of the occupants. Then the Hive platform should be allowed to optimize the comfort of the environment.
Before making changes to a room that feels uncomfortable, check for the progress arrows in the comfort controls panel. Those arrows show when the system is in the process of cooling or heating to bring the space back within the ideal comfort range.
If comfort still needs adjustment, you can move the clothing slider towards "I'm Cold" or "I'm Hot." Then note the progress arrows and give the system time to adjust.
To adjust comfort for a zone on the Hive:
A guest can adjust comfort on the Hive screen without a login.
- On the Hive, while viewing the 3D model of the building, tap to select a zone.
The Comfort Controls panel opens showing the current comfort for that space.
Note: If a zone is not selected, you will see a generalized view of comfort for multiple zones, and the slider to adjust will not be visible. - Check to see if there are progress arrows showing that the system is in the process of changing conditions. If so, consider waiting until the progress arrows to disappear and assess the comfort at that time before deciding to make adjustments.
This allows the system to use its general settings and optimize for energy use, and avoid overcompensating by adjusting while changes are still in progress. Typically you would want to keep the setting at the clothing level that would normally be worn by occupants of that zone.
If you still want to make changes, proceed to the next step. - Move the clothing slider based on the discomfort you are feeling, toward "I'm Hot" or "I'm Cold."
Follow the explanation in the Comfort Controls Quick Ref, here or by tapping the help icon in the upper right of the Hive screen. - The system will display arrows when changes are in progress to respond to the new setting.
To adjust comfort for a zone in the cloud:
For a building that is being controlled (not just monitored), a building manager or other authorized user can log in and adjust comfort using our browser apps in the cloud. This task requires Editor permissions or greater on the project.
- Sign in to the PassiveLogic software suite (Chrome browser required). The Portfolio landing page opens.
- In Portfolio, select the deployed project and click the icons in the project card to open in Live.
A 3D image of the building is displayed on the Hive or in the Live app Building tab. - Select the zone that you want to adjust. Click the dragger
at the lower the right to open the Comfort Controls panels.
